Luckygirl Podcast02 – Practice Makes Perfect
What habits are you forming without even realizing it and are you becoming an expert in things that will serve you and your goals?
Check out this episode!
Today I prepped a simple snack on a tray… Guacamole, mineral water, those little tortilla sticks all rolled up; (you know, they gotta be strong enough to stand up to my guac (I like chunky guacamole).
So there I was, with a teetering tray in one hand and a towel in the other and I thought “I could carry this tray in my sleep.” I haven’t waited tables for about a decade and here I was, just like riding a bike… Which got me to thinkin’…
The most basic series of movements for waiting tables is nearly the same for every establishment, regardless of the type of food served.
If you walk into almost any restaurant, you can pretty much expect the following interactin with your server to happen after you sit at a table. Your server will:
1) greet your party and take a drink order
2) deliver drinks
3) take your food order
4) deliver order
5) check up during the meal
6) offer dessert
7) deliver the check
lLt’s see what happens when a person repeats that series, five times in an hour, for approx 10 hours a day, in 4 different states, intermittently for 14 years and watch how good you become at carrying a tray.
At a conservative estimate, one could guess that I have practiced the “waiting tables” series approx 1 gajillion times. It is automatically burned into my brain and muscle memory. That tray feels so… Familiar in my hand.
So what are you practicing? What do you do repeatedly?
What kind of expert are you training yourself to evolve into?
Are you becoming an expert:
- TV Watcher
- an expert Drinker?
- an expert Worrier?
- an expert Complainer?
- an expert at Candy Crush or Farmville?
Or are you training yourself to be an expert in:
- Patience
- Compassion
- Business
- Efficiency
- Personal development?
We all have access to the the same number of hours in a day. How are you spending those hours? While you are waiting for appts, do you read the smut magazines or do you listen to a brief podcast or watch a training video or read a blog post that might help you grow personally and professionally? Are you maximizing every minute of every day to your best advantage?
Now granted, as individuals, we all have different roles and responsibilities. So take stock of your top values and ask yourself: Is this the best use of my time right now? Am I living my values? Am I feeding my passion? Is this behavior serving my ultimate purpose? If it isn’t, then move on and prioritize your health and wellbeing. As entrepreneurs, we wear many hats and it is easy to get caught up in the daily minutia and forget the big picture. Make it a priority to constantly re-evaluate your actions and how you are spending your time. The world doesn’t need another expert Candy Crush Gamer. The world needs your vision and your purpose so stay focused and bring your vision into the world. If you’re a people pleaser, like I was, then you might get some pushback from others as you switch your priorities, but that’s okay. Let them worry about themselves and you just focus on you. The more you practice this skill, the easier it will get.
Thanks for listening and I hope you found value in my message today. I’ll leave you with a quote from KYLO “I didn’t set the boundary either to offend or please you. I did it to manage the priorities and goals I have set for my life.”
